In this post, I am going to attempt and fail to group things into one weakly formed theme: throwbacks! Kick off your weekend with some new music. Mayka Mei Media Report approved.
The Way I See It by Raphael Saadiq
How is it a throwback? MOTOWN! Motown. This whole thing is Motown! Oakland native Raphael Saadiq looks and sounds like he just walked out of some Detroit recording studio. Saadiq’s not the most widely recognized name in mainstream R&B, but this list of guest appearances ought to make it clear that you need to know him: Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, and Joss Stone. If his name is new to you, just pretend you already knew that Saadiq’s not “up and coming,” he’s already arrived. “Love That Girl” makes me wanna snap-shoop.“Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan
How is it a throwback? It’s your annual revenge single, going where Blu Cantrell did not with “Hit ‘Em Up Style.” Jazmine Sullivan is not as cray-cray as Trina, but it still gets the point across to her ex-man. Soulfully sung over a tango track, makes me wish I had somebody to hate on.Shrek the Musical
How is it a throwback? …Because it’s an ode to Dreamworks’ ogre? Free MP3 of “I Know It’s Today,” performed by Leah Greenhaus, Marissa O’Donnell & Sutton Foster, available from the homepage.Update: I posted the Shrek musical link before I actually listened to the song, and it’s really really bad. DO NOT CLICK! (My apologies. It won’t happen again.)
The Pink Tamago by Austin! White
How is it a throwback? Great remixes that don’t fall down that overdone “I call these shitty cuts and splices ‘mash-ups’” route. My favorite is “Everything You Need,” featuring Young Hood and a Nintendo beat! (He’s also 19. WTF.)
Just for the Hell of it, here’s Trina going crazy:
Diamond princess!
