So like I had mentioned before, my first day at MAGIC came right on the heels of seeing Lady Gaga in concert, and my mind was fried even before Gaga came along. Bill and I got home around 1 in the morning, I decided to do a really thorough once-over of my luggage and planned outfits for the next couple of days, and then it hit me: My bangs needed to be trimmed.
Scientists can explain why we get our second winds at wee hours in the morning and why cockamamie ideas seem like Pulitzer Prize winners when even the stars have gone to sleep. Unfortunately my better half was asleep so that by the time I had drawn the scissors above my brow, it was too late. I trimmed my bangs in one all-too-simple squeeze, and then, only then, did my brain decide to react and wake up with “Hey, why the flip am I trimming my hair at two in the morning?”
Alas, I didn’t have time to ponder the whys. I banished myself to bed, only to rise again two and a half hours later to get to the airport.
This all seems like a tangential story, I’m sure (I am a bit of an expert on those.), but in actuality, it all ties in perfectly to MAGIC.
I basically dropped my bags off at the bellhop and we were off to Workroom and Project. at Workroom we met Eugenia Kim, and it took all I had not to say “I really want the mint green fedora you designed for Target!” Project was another story. Project was just…huge. It was like Comic-Con all over again, except people weren’t in costume. Don’t go thinking Comic-Conners are all uniquely weird, though. People at MAGIC put as much thought into their outfits as people at Comic-Con put into theirs. It’s just a different space. In both cases, though, you need to invest in the most comfortable shoes possible.
So anyway, we get to Project, which is the same as saying “We got to an airplane hangar full of stalls of clothes,” and I was just -whelmed. I’m sure if I was more rested I would have just fallen over, so I’m actually kind of grateful that my special kind of exhaustion kept me afloat. It’s weird, thinking “Hey, being desensitized is cool!” That sounds like a teenager’s excuse to inhale liquid nitrogen.
I really liked seeing all the SS2011 previews. It’s a different creature, seeing all these new and reworked designs and concepts come out and not being able to buy them or even try them on. I guess it’s good in that way, because I probably would not have been able to afford myself for three full days of MAGIC in Vegas. There’s that much to see. (And yet, not. Being surrounded by all those creations gives you a really sharpened eye to what’s original and what isn’t.)
We hit a point in our plan of attack where we all needed a break, though, so we broke into small groups and walked around at a more leisurely pace and – hey, what is that? Are those mirrors? Is that inked-up woman holding scissors? ARE THEY GIVING HAIRCUTS?
Yes, dear readers, I am now convinced that the “magic” in “MAGIC” describes the free dry cuts offered by Barracuda Salon stylists at the Project Trade Show. How serendipitous! Once I was introduced to my stylist Natalie, I said, “Can you fix this?,” followed by a general sweeping motion around my forehead.
So there. She fixed it. She claims she couldn’t see what there was to fix, but I’m convinced she’s just a professional and didn’t want to say “Well, I can’t exactly ‘fix’ what you’ve cut too short to begin with.” On the floor of the Project Trade Show, approximately twelve hours after I had massacred my own bangs, Natalie fixed my hair. Thanks, MAGIC.
Actual pics below the jump.
I took this one for Bill. He is the man.

Fuzzy, cushy piles. How I would have liked to nap on them.

So many awesome hats! These were made in London. Goorin Bros. were also in the house. And since visiting MAGIC, I have acquired two hats that are not baseball caps or freebies.

Cha, Puma booth! This one goes to all my fellow Club Puma friends.

At the end of the day I tagged along with Sam and Ben from 722 Figueroa. Went to this panel where they were, like, saying that fashion and the Twitter could collide. Like, WTF, right? What a crazy idea.
