If you poopoo’d my story of how I got my job through Twitter, you might be the anti-social media type. You may not believe in all these newfangled technologies. Perhaps you think Twitter is pushing us along a regression in proper communication. You’s a hater. I get it.
If you’re bookish and philosophically against the notion of communication through social media, well, I’ve been DMing with my new favorite author, so you can just take your words and eat ‘em.
Remember when I was antsy and anxious about the mystery lump in my breast? I was clutching a book, Free Food for Millionaires, in the waiting room as I awaited My First Biopsy. I mentioned it here, in my blog, in my summary of that experience.
I’m no stranger to this non-magical science. The next day, one Min Jin Lee started following me on Twitter, and hey – just so happens “Min Jin Lee” is the same name printed in the author section of the cover for Free Food for Millionaires. Impressive. My post must have popped up on Google Alerts for Lee’s novel, she must have landed on my blog, and she must have clicked through to my Twitter feed.
I immediately started following Lee back and DMed (DM = “Direct Message”, private messaging) her thanking her for following me. I told her I was loving the book so far. She DMed me back, saying thanks and that she had read about my biopsy. She wished me well.
This was better than paying 25 bucks to get into a non-intimate book signing. The author of the book I was reading just wished me the best in my personal health! Amazing.
This just gave me more reason to finally wrap up reading FFM, like I had to report back to my two-person reading group, except my reading group partner is the person who wrote the material…Like an eager puppy, I DMed Lee right after I finished the open end on Casey Han’s life, and, well, had another personal meet-and-greet. Read these in reverse chronological:
While Twitter, Facebook, or any social media tool is not guaranteed to save your business (Swear to God, if self-described social media “gurus” are so good at what they do, why don’t they get off of their blogs and start turning shit around? Two words: Hot. Air.), it can be surprisingly, incredibly powerful. It just connected me to a Korean American expat living in Tokyo working on her Next Big Thing. Crazy story? Yes. But to my mind, absolutely fascinating.
Update: Not going to take credit for that headline. ‘Twas adapted from a tweet by @EllasMom in April of 2009 (and many other articulate people, I’m sure):
@MarketingProfs I filled out your survey – one of the things I’m noticing is twitter makes normal people famous and famous people normal. 12:23 PM Apr 8th, 2009 via TweetDeck in reply to MarketingProfs

This is very awesome.
And, I too am happy that the tumor was benign.
Thanks for this well written and funny article.
Thanks, Sakina.
Great story….and true to the core. Loved the whole article. I was laughing and nodding my head.
