- All the steampunk ladies made me want to try on a corset. So I did. It took four inches off of my waist, but would have also taken $325 out of my bank account. Also, corsets do not guarantee increasing one’s boob size. It was kind of disappointing how I had this awesome hourglass figure with empty cups on top, just waiting to be squished. ‘Twas handmade, though, which is quite an impressive way to getting Mayka waisted. (See what I did there?)
- Overall, while APE seemed to fall at just the cusp of the official announcement of the recession/depression, WonderCon fell smack in the midst of it. All around, I think there was less buying and selling going on.

I like intricate things, whether it’s the way Marc Ecko layers urban flourishes to Star Wars icons or how illustrated vintage children’s books work sentences into each book plate. This grows my admiration for steampunk culture, which I see as more my style than Renaissance faires – combining modernity with old timey cogs. I adored Jeff Hoke’s Museum of Lost Wonder. I’ve been on a constant hunt for really worthwhile pop-up books, but his elaborately researched and crafted paper models make me want to jump into that world instead. My favorites were “The Universe” and “Theater of the Mind.” The Crimson Chain also had the coolest locks on each of their leather-bound journals and purses. Three-pronged rotating locks! You just have to see them.
- Seeing an AANG AIN’T WHITE T-shirt caused our table to erupt in cheer! Ya-ay! (I should have done something to further the movement…)
Update: Found this pic on the People Against Racebending: Protest of the Cast of The Last Airbender Movie Facebook group. Here it is!

- I don’t know why I didn’t take my camera out for anything.
- Don’t you love it when writers cop out and write in bulleted lists? Buahaha.

I did a really good job not buying a single thing throughout this entire weekend! Even when Lillian Todaro promised me 50% off on her absolutely gorgeous, looks-like-it-was-made-for-me jewelry, I didn’t return. (CHECK OUT THE FAIRY BUTTERFLY COLLECTION!) Even when I found Gama-Go with their Yeti-Bama tees for cheaper than online, I didn’t take out my wallet. I’m totally good at this “con” thing.
- I started feeling under the weather this morning. I am super glad to be home now. Hooray for local weekend events.
- On costumes: Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather were my favorite sighting of the weekend, see: “THE FAIRIES FROM CINDERELLA ARE HERE!” Kids in costumes are generally cute. Dressing up an unsuspecting child as Heath Ledger’s Joker costumed as a nurse is FREAKY. (Hopefully Bongo posts this picture. I was hiding behind the table when she passed by.)
- Our car’s rear passenger tire was dangerously low by the time we left Moscone. Thankfully, it was able to withstand the drive back to the East Bay without any surprise poppage.
- Being surrounded by all these artists makes me want to get into creating something. When I went to Comic Con, I felt an overwhelming wave of “I am wasting space.” Now, having successfully created a dress out of a tall tee that did not fall apart, I feel like I might have what it takes to make something silly and loveable and hawk it at future cons. Look out, pimps, sneaker lipstick mirrors (or something) coming to you, soon. (This overwhelming wave of “I need to do something” probably has something to do with sitting next to three always-have-their-sketchbooks artists. Cough cough and cough. I should have run around answering people with, “Yes, I am Brittney Lee! I sneeze Hawaiian gods and goddesses into life.”)
- I finally busted out the POW! earrings, which would have been an even bigger hit if I wasn’t in such a sickly stay-at-booth mood.
- Also, I finally introduced Bongo to pho. Yeah yeah, we went to Pho Hoa, but hey, when you want something that hits the spot, you want something that hits the spot. I still don’t know any food that better alleviates from a long, rainy weekend than pho. Part of me wants to start a blog in search of The Perfect Pho.

I would so read your pho blog.
You know, I’m thinking these are great grounds for a joint venture… A focused blog by one of us? Mais non!
haha we should totally team up on a blog
