It was a pretty busy weekend for theMaykazine the last couple of days. First, all of that Avatar bullshit. Then I had to take a little break from blogging for some teambuilding with my old Pilipino dance crew, Kawayan Folk Arts. Then Nicole went and won the nation over with some really fantastic Fox-ness. Naturally, most of the search inquiries leading to tM have been about Avatar and Nicole. But the most standout query is any variation of “nicole fox + ethnicity.” (So now you’re interested in ethnicity, huh? Hah.)
For those of you who were wondering, Nicole is part Pilipino, part Caucasian, but basically, all Fox. GOD, I’m clever!
I have to be honest, I didn’t catch much of the Miss America programming, but I did see Nicole make it to the initial top 15, which made me very happy. Bongo and Mindy filled me in on more of the competition, whose swimsuit competition Bongo was particularly interested in. (Huh.)
Here are a few pics the Fox family forwarded to friends, and I am STOKED that Nicole wore such a classy, modern-looking dress. None of that wannabe-Kentucky Derby Swarovski-beadazzled Gretchen Rossi business. Not a fan of the horizontal line of crystals here, but I just love the movement of the skirt:

Nicole Fox's yellow evening gown.
AND WHAT AN AMAZING TAHITIAN COSTUME!!! You know me, I always get excited when culture makes its way onto a “mainstream” stage.

Shake a tailfeather! (Nicole would expect me to say that.)
Also, good call, Tich! He IMed me a very ominous “[Miss Indiana]‘s gonna be in top 3,” and she was crowned Miss America! I guess he knows women?
OMG, I want to be able to Tahitian dance now. And wear that costume. And just…be…awesome.
OMG YOU SHOULD SKETCH THAT!
Or make it out of money…
LOL! Haha…You forgot to mention Mario Lopez’s funny grin and MAHALO comment after Nicole’s tahitian performance. I was actually joking that Indiana was going to win after the 1st episode cause I thought she was the hottest girl based on looks alone. LOL! I tried to bet Alicia that Indiana would win with 1:10 odds too, so my $10 vs. her $100, but she wouldn’t bite. LOL!
Not to be rude, but either you missed the “h” when you said “with my old Pilipino dance crew”, or it should be spelled with an “f”.
Anyway, I saw her perform in the Miss Hawai`i pageant. She was good but I was rooting for a friend instead.
Actually, zoikoi, that spelling is fully intentional. When Americans colonized the Philippines, they made up that spelling even though there is no “f” sound in Tagalog. “Pilipino” is thus the reclaimed spelling of the identity, closer in authenticity to the sounds you hear in Pilipino languages.
/End culture lesson of the day! Very perceptive of you, though.
Hmm. In that case Hawaiians should just speak Hawaiian, and write nothing. Haha, I wouldn’t have to write essays anymore! But then again I have a bad memory…
You should ask your teachers if you can hula for your exams. Hula – the original interpretive dance.
