My first day at Comic Con is somewhere near halfway over, but I had to take a break from all the human traffic and have parked myself against an emptied newsletter rack. It’s busy. There are thousands of people here and I’m sure more will arrive tomorrow.

It’s Star Wars Day, so there’s a fair amount of toddlers dressed as Yoda and duos and trios of storm troopers milling around. Seems like everybody at the Con loved Dark Knight, and a lot of Batman characters are hanging out as well. Minus the occasional motorized wheelchair running over my foot while waiting in line for a $6 “pretzel hot dog,” the people watching is fun!

A really awesome Davy Jones just passed me by, making me wish the MaykaBook Pro came with an opposable iSight.

Speaking of iSomethings, in his visiting of booths and artists, Bongo has further proved my theory that the best way to display your portfolio at such a pedestrian event is to save it to your iPod/iPhone. His iPhone has become a sixth person to our carpool, and though iPhone’s GPS skills are not perfect, iPhone’s ability to share by showing and telling are really helpful in a moment like this. Sharing your work on a portable device saves you some cash, saves some trees, and makes your viewer’s portfolio-flipping experience interactive! Hooray!

Personally, I’ve already purchased a print from Martin Hsu. In fact, I pretty much did that in the first half hour I arrived at Comic Con.

I have waited for this print since Maker Faire.

I have waited for this print since Maker Faire.

It’s really hard not to buy every awesome print I’ve seen since then, and I’m held back only by the purposefully minimal amount of cash I left in my wallet.

EEE! Someone did the Joker nurse costume! I do not want to get close to that guy.

I’ve attended a couple of panels and got to hear Stan Lee (Duh.) and Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) speak about adapting comics to film and producing a successful genre television show, respectively.

I was somehow registered as a “Professional” so my badge says “Mayka Mei, Professional.” People keep asking me about the type of “work” I do. The answer changes every five minutes, but I end up telling them the truth “I’m an animator/character designer’s plus one.”

While Bongo and I were at one of the small press booths, we met the director of Kung Fu Panda. He was standing right there! My jaw dropped open, but luckily I was hidden by Bongo’s shoulder.

Some Klingons are hassling a 12-year old. I hope he cries.

Anyway, it’s high time I get up off of my ass and rejoin the masses. I leave you with my two favorite Comic Con quotes so far:

This girl looked like a dark-haired Alice in Wonderland. I instantly wanted to go to bed with her. I mean, that’s how she looked.

Do you see this girl riding the cracken? That’s so hot!

Bongo’s back from Part 2,000 of one long, continuous shopping spree. More pictures and words later!
