Yellow cutout dresses, the “Yellow Wallpaper” of fashion.

22 05 2008

Have you read the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper?” I have, and it’s a must-read if you’re at all interested in colorgenics, interior design, or becoming the master of obscure Wikipedia facts. (Did you know that pencils are traditionally painted yellow in reference to “the Orient,” where the best graphite was found? Seriously. Every time you use a yellow pencil, I hope you think of me.) Anyway, yellow, in summary, in the Church of Rainbows, is a dangerous color to use in large amounts. It elicits sickly thoughts of jaundice, momentary causes of alarm, and sour, acidic tastes. It is cheerful, but only in small doses.

A couple of weeks ago a teenager in Dallas, Texas, was arrested at her high school prom because of her scandalicious dress. Okay, really, it was a set of two carefully tied yellow scarves.

Go Fug Yourself has also recently re-fugged Eva Herzigova, but her original offense also starred a yellow dress with showy bits of skin.

See the two dresses on trial. Is it just me, or does it seem like no one can do yellow cutout dresses right?

That ain't cute.
What message does this color choice communicate to her date?
DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE!

Fire this stylist!
How can you make such a gorgeous woman too much to handle?
And, umm, what happened to that front-hanging crotch piece?

I’m all for avant-garde fashion, but even with these two slim attractive women, their style choices just scream TACKY. Nothing could save them from fashion police scorn. CAUTION, people, CAUTION!

I ain’t ready for that jelly.
